This page covers what the web version of Lostwell and this website store and send. In short: your saves stay in your browser; gameplay data with an ID is only sent if you agree; no data is sold and there are no ad trackers.

Stored in your browser

  • Saves: kept in your browser with the 3 most recent backups; not uploaded
  • Settings: volume, graphics, language, key bindings and so on
  • Your answer to the gameplay data question, and if you agreed, a randomly generated data ID
  • Feedback that couldn't be sent yet: kept until the game can reach us, then sent
  • The website: a cookie remembering the language, if you picked one

All of this stays on your computer, and clearing your browsing data deletes it.

Gameplay data

The first time you open the game, it asks whether you agree to share gameplay data.

Whatever you answer, counts with no ID at all are sent (for example: the page was opened, play was pressed, the game loaded, which answer you picked, it was opened on a phone). Each one only records the language, the type of browser and whether it's a phone. They can't be tied to you, and nothing is stored on your computer.

If you say yes: the game also makes a random data ID and sends it with gameplay events (such as how deep you got, whether you got out or fell, how long you played), each with the version, language, browser, whether it's a phone and which address the game was opened from. Nothing that identifies you, like a name or email.

We use it to see what's too hard, what's dull and where new players give up, and then improve the game. You can change your mind any time in the game's settings.

Feedback

When you send feedback from the game, it includes the version, language, data ID, your browser and window size, the floor or screen you're on, and recent errors.

By default it also includes a screenshot and a replay of the current floor (your inputs on this floor plus your save from when you entered it), so the problem can be reproduced exactly. You can untick any of these before sending. Contact details are only included if you type them in.

Feedback is stored on our servers. IP addresses are not recorded.

Transfer codes

When you make a transfer code, your three save slots and settings are uploaded to our server so you can fetch them in the Steam version. The server keeps them for 24 hours, then deletes them automatically.

Newsletter

Leaving your email is optional. It's kept by the newsletter service and used only for big news (the Steam demo, Next Fest, launch day), never passed on to anyone else. You're only subscribed after clicking the link in the confirmation email, and every email has a one-click unsubscribe at the bottom.

Hosting

The website and the web version are hosted on Cloudflare, which processes access logs (such as IP addresses) for security and operation; see Cloudflare's privacy policy. This site has no ads and no third-party tracking.

The desktop version

The desktop version (and later the Steam version) sends anonymous gameplay data by default, says so the first time you open it, and lets you turn it off in the settings. Saves are kept in a folder on your computer.

Seeing or deleting your data

Send your data ID to [email protected] and say whether you'd like to see or delete your data; we'll take care of it and reply. You'll find the data ID in the game's settings. To unsubscribe from emails, use the link at the bottom of any email.
